CANCUN MONEY MATTERS

Although the official currency in Cancun is the Mexican peso, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. It can sometimes be difficult to get change for larger bills such as $50's and 100's, especially with the smaller vendors. It's always a good idea to load up on $1's, $5's, $10's and $20's before you hit town.
The value of the Mexican Pesos versus the U.S. dollar has remained somewhat consistent recently at around 10 pesos to the U.S. dollar. If you want to make your life easy when trying to figure out the dollar amount of an item priced in Pesos, just divide the number of pesos by 10. As an example the cost of an item or service priced at 10 pesos is about one U.S. dollar, while the cost of an item or service at 100 pesos is approximately $10 U.S. Again this is just to make it easy. If you really want to get an exact conversion amount, look for the current peso exchange rate which is usually located near the cash register or near the front window of most businesses. Bringing along a calculator is a practice many travelers utilize.
Some folks headed for Cancun bring a portion of their money in Traveler's Checks. Although this is not a bad idea in case of a lost wallet, it can be a bit inconvenient to have all of your funds in Cashier's Checks. Don't be afraid to bring cash on your trip, just don't bring it all out with you when you go to dinner or out dancing!
If you find yourself needing to exchange dollars for pesos or vice versa, look for Casa de Cambios located in the shopping areas throughout Cancun. Their exchange rate will not be as low as that of a bank, but hey, you're on vacation! The last thing you want to do is go stand in line at a bank just to save a few cents. You belong at the beach, amigo!
