AKUMAL

Akumal is located approximately 63 miles south of Cancun on a beautiful stretch of protected beach. White sandy beaches, agua-blue waters, and just enough amenities to make your beach experience fulfilling!

The word "Akumal" in the Mayan language means 'turtle', and every summer the turtles return to lay their eggs in the sand.

A reef just offshore provides excellent snorkeling and diving, and kayaking is also a fun option here.

 

BELIZE

Belize is located just a few hundred miles south of Cancun, but it is worlds away in many respects. The population of Belize is only 260,000 people and most of that is in the capital of the country Belize City. The language of Belize is English, although various dialects are common throughout the country.

The natural beauty of Belize can be enjoyed in it's offshore islands, reefs, coastal beaches, and inland jungles.

Belize can be reached from Cancun by car by driving south to the Mexican border town of Chetumal, or by taking the coastal dirt road south of Cancun to to Xcalak and then crossing over the waterway by panga. Carlos Fiesta did this excursion and loved it!

 

CHICHEN-ITZA

Chichen-Itza is one of the most spectacular archeological finds on the Yucatan Peninsula. The pyramids, observatory, and ancient sports-courts are a marvel to experience.

Regular bus tours can be obtained in Cancun, and driving in by rental car is also an option. Either way, its an experience not soon to be forgotten!

COZUMEL ISLAND

Cozumel is a delicious Caribbean island located just 54 miles (72 km.) southeast of Cancun. Most of the development in Cozumel is located in the islands only city of San Miguel, and there are several hotels on the beach north and south of town.

CROCUN

Located 25 minutes south of Cancun.
A crocodile ranch and ecological park in a jungle setting of 3 hectares. Other animals that can be seen include monkeys, deer, wild boars and snakes. Wild birds can also be enjoyed throughout the park!

 

CUBA

ISLA MUJERES

Isla Mujeres is just a short hop across the channel from Cancun (3 miles - 5 kilometers), and a world away in time. This small island offers everything that Cancun offers, but on a more intimate scale. Beautiful beaches, excellent snorkeling, good restaurants, and wonderful shopping are less than an hour away!

The island is less than 4 miles long and only 500 meters wide, so renting a moped or a bicycle can be a great way to explore the island. The turtle farm and dolphin enclosure are just two of the sites along the way.

El Garrafon Underwater National park is the perfect place to take an underwater adventure. The snorkeling here is wonderful! Further offshore, scuba divers can enjoy the Cave of the sleeping sharks!

When traveling to Isla Mujeres from Cancun by ferry, remember that the convenient Playa Linda pier ferries are over twice as expensive as the ferries from Puerto Juarez! A water taxi from Playa Caracol (next to the Fiesta Americana Hotel) also makes regular connections to Isla Mujeres and can be reached at 011-52 (998) 886-4270.

TULUM

Tulum is the most popular of Mexico's Mayan sites, and for several good reasons. It's location has a lot to do with it, only 81 miles (131 kilometers) from Cancun. The spectacular ruins are located on a bluff just above the turquoise waters and a beautiful beach, adding to the popularity. Guided tours of the grounds are very reasonable, and are a great help in understanding the Mayan's way of life. Guides are usually included in tour packages, or can be arranged last minute at the entrance to the Tulum site.
