Phoning home from Cancun is getting easy, and is getting more affordable every year! In room hotels phones are the most convenient way to make a call, and most hotels have very efficient telephone systems. However the rates from these hotel phones is usually high. There are several ways to get around sky-high telephone charges in Cancun.

Most seasoned Mexico travelers utilize the services of ATT for phone calls from Mexico to the United States. To do so it is important to be sure you have an ATT account before you leave home to head to Cancun. Once you have received your calling card number from ATT you are all set to make phone calls from the telephones you see all over Cancun. You will need one more thing before you can get that pay phone working for you. You will need a pre-paid telephone calling card, available for about $5 at many of the shops and stores around town. Just stick the card into the phone to get a dial-tone. Then simply call the ATT operation at (800) 462-4240. The system will prompt you to dial the number you wish to reach, and then prompt you to dial in your ATT number. That's it! You are now kilometers ahead in the telephone game.

If you find yourself in Mexico without an ATT calling card number, you still have a way to beat the high hotel telephone rates. Look for a sign that says "Long Distance" on some of the stores in the shopping areas. These folks will dial the number you want, and then have you pick up the telephone receiver when your party answers. The rates for this service is about $1.40 per minute, and they will use a stopwatch to determine the length of time you were on the phone. This method of phone calls may be a bit inconvenient, but it's nice to know you are going home with no phone bills following you.

For phone calls to Cancun from outside the country you will need to dial the international access number (011) plus the Mexico country code (52) then the three digit are code (998) followed by the seven digit phone number of the person or business you are calling.
