HEALTH ISSUES
The good news is that fewer people each year experience any type of sickness while travelling in Mexico. However some travelers experience a traveler's illness known as tourista when visiting other countries, including Mexico. Other names of this common bug include Montezuma's Revenge, the trots, or just plain diarrhea. A sudden change in diet and exposure to new bacteria associated with travelling in a foreign land is enough to set some body systems into a slight tizzy.
There are several things one can do to increase their chances of a healthy trip. A key element is to transition s-l-o-w-e-l-y into the new vacation routine. If you get off of the plane and start chugging margaritas, bake in the sun for hours on end, and then load up on spicy food (not to even mention staying up to all hours dancing and drinking some more!) this formula for sickness is usually successful.
For those with sensitive stomachs its probably best to avoid drinking tap water, even though most restaurants and hotels make it a point to purify their water to help the tourist keep healthy. Drinking bottled sodas, beer and wine will certainly help.
Washing your hands after a day of playing or an afternoon of handling money (while shopping!) is always a good idea while on vacation. And as a natural preventative measure large quantities of lime juice and garlic will help keep you healthy.
Having said all that, if you feel you may have caught a bug during your journey (you will usually know by your third day) there are some treatments that will help plug things up. Probably the quickest solution is an over-the-counter remedy called Lomotil. Other options include Bepto Bismol, Kaopectate and Imodium. If symptoms continue on for a few days seeing a doctor might be an option.
Another health issue while visiting Cancun is getting sunburn. Do yourself a favor and be aware that this one issue can ruin your hard earned trip. Preventative measures include limiting your exposure to the sun for short periods, be generous with sunscreen (waterproof if you're planning on getting wet), keep you lips happy with Chopstick, and don't forget how awesome you look in a hat and sunglasses! Snorkeling? The fish don't care what you look like so be smart and wear a T-shirt if you have sensitive skin. If you forgot to do any or all of the above and get sunburn lotions, vinegar and Solarcaine will help ease the pain. Drinking plenty of fluids and taking tepid showers will also help. Remember...it's funner to eat lobster than to look like one!
SPRING BREAK INFORMATION!
Cancun is probably the hottest spot on the planet for Spring Break getaways! For more information on what's going down on the island for Spring Break...check out these web sites!
TIMESHARES
While vacationing in Cancun you may be approached by a friendly guy or gal and offered a free breakfast, tour or activity in exchange for listening to a sales presentation about buying a 'timeshare' or 'vacation ownership' in Cancun. Indeed for some people it might make sense to own a week or two in paradise. However it helps to keep in mind the value of your time while on vacation.
If you do decide to garner further information on timeshares, you might want to consider dedicating time to this endeavor during the latter part of your stay, as opposed to the first part. There are many wonderful and exciting things to see and do in Cancun, but sitting in an enclosed room watching slides of a timeshare resort is not usually at the top of most folk's "things to do" list while in Cancun.
There are two basic approaches when confronted with a time share 'opportunity'. If you are not interested in spending time watching a time share presentation, just say "no thank you" and keep on walking. Don't worry, there is another nice couple behind you from Kansas who will be happy to talk with them after you pass by.
If you do have an interest in obtaining more information, feel free to grab the brochure and then arrange to attend a meeting at a time that is convenient for your vacation schedule.
